My hand built ceramics are created in my home studio in rural Northumberland, surrounded by my beautiful garden and views over the adjoining fields. My work is influenced by the natural world around me, and also reflects a childhood growing up in rural Perthshire, and family holidays to the West Coast of Scotland.
Anne James Ceramics Flower Bricks
Having worked as a medical scientist in London for many year, in 2000 I took the plunge and changed careers to become a ceramicist. After training at Camberwell College of Art and then Morley College in Westminster, we moved up to Northumberland where I continued one-to-one training with an inspirational ceramicist, Marj Taylor. She taught me to appreciate the detail in my work, an aspect which is now the driving force behind my inspiration.

The challenge of constructing a piece and then bringing it to life with texture is what I enjoy. Found objects, printing block, anaglypta wallpapers from my childhood home and every day objects are used to create the texture. I use mostly brush on celadon glazes because their delicacy is well suited to the detail of the texture. I work in traditional stoneware, occasionally in white stoneware, and fire in an electric kiln.
Anne James Ceramics Jugs on Kiln
I create both functional and decorative pieces, plus seasonal hanging decorations. Vases and flower bricks form a large part of my work due to my passion for gardening. My functional items include bowls, plates, vessels and jugs, which can be purchased or commissioned in matching or complementary designs and glaze colours.

If you would like to commission a special piece for yourself, or as a bespoke gift, then please do get in touch. Do remember that commissions may require a lead time of up to 2 months for larger pieces.

Every item I produce is hand made, and as such very slight variations may occur in the piece you purchase compared with the shop photographs. This is the nature and joy of hand made ceramics.
